US prosecutors said they are now engaged in plea negotiations with the former US representative George Santos to resolve criminal corruption charges ahead of trial, Luc Cohen reports for Reuters. Santos has pleaded not guilty to charges of laundering campaign funds to pay for his personal expenses, charging donors’ credit cards without their consent, and receiving unemployment benefits while he was employed, among other accusations. Santos, a Republican, embellished key aspects of his biography and resume, including falsely claiming Jewish heritage and telling voters he attended New York University and worked at Goldman Sachs.
